USC finishes regular season 30-0

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 24, 2017

SAN LUIS OBISPO — USC (No. 1) finished the regular season unbeaten for the second time in three seasons, closing out the 2017 campaign last Saturday with a 4-1 victory over UCLA (No. 2) on senior day at Merle Norman Stadium. The victory extended the Trojans’ winning streak to 60 matches (30 this season) that dates back to early March of 2016. USC gave a home send off to seniors Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes and Nicolette Martin/Allie Wheeler, two pairs’ teams who have contributed greatly to the Trojans’ success. Claes and Hughes closed out the win with an emphatic sweep of Nicole and Megan McNamara of UCLA in a match that featured the two premier pairs teams in the nation. The loss snapped a 24-match win streak for the Bruins. Pepperdine (No. 3) defeated Loyola Marymount (No. 14) to finish the regular season and earn the Waves a second straight West Coast Conference Tournament title. Florida State (No. 4) won the CCSA Championship for the second year in a row, defeating Florida International (No. 9) twice. “This is a big confidence boost,” Florida State head coach Brooke Niles said “The last three weeks we have been playing really good volleyball. We are just ready to compete.” Florida International’s second place finish, which included a win over LSU (No. 8) kept the Panthers in the running for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The eight teams will be announced this Sunday.
