USC continues unbeaten after Gamecock Grand Slam

SAN LUIS OBISPO — USC continued its impressive start to the 2017 season, dominating the Gamecock Grand Slam with fours wins against ranked teams including No. 4 Florida State. It was the third win for the Trojans against Florida State, the same team USC defeated in the title match in 2016. USC improved its record to 16-0. The Seminoles finished strong at the Gamecock Grand Slam on Sunday, wrapping up the event with a pair of 4-1 victories over No. 9 South Carolina and No. 13 Stetson. Florida State also beat No. 9 Georgia State in the event in South Carolina. The Seminoles head coach Brooke Nile feels her team continues to improve, despite the losses to powerhouse USC.

“Overall we showed a lot of heart,” Niles said. “We had a lot of close wins and are learning to be patient and tough. Overall, it was a great tournament because every team was strong. We were able to come away with three big wins which was great for us.” LSU (No. 7) made a nice move up the poll, settling into a season-high No. 7. The Tigers went 4-0 with all wins coming against ranked opponents, including Arizona, Arizona State (twice) and TCU. St. Mary’s (No. 17) used a big win over California to crack the Top 20. Stetson (No. 13) earned some wins over ranked opponents, defeating both Georgia State and South Carolina.
