USC extends winning streak to 50

SAN LUIS OBISPO — There is a reason USC has received every first place vote in all five DiG Magazine polls this season. The Trojans, who have won 50 straight matches covering one and half seasons, improved to 20-0 on the season. USC seniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes led the way. The pair went 8-0 in straight sets and had five sets last week in which they held opponents to single-digit points to improve to 26-0 on the season and extended their record-setting winning streak to 99 matches. The Trojans’ tandem took down last week’s DiG Magazine National Pair of the Week Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund (Saint Mary’s College) twice, in convincing fashion. Claes and Hughes won the gold bracket in two different pairs tournaments (with Cal and SMC) and helped the Women of Troy win all four of their duals by a 5-0 count. There was little movement in this week’s poll, but Long Beach State (No. 5) did jump ahead of Hawaii (No. 6) on the strength of a 3-2 head-to-head victory in a Big West Conference match. The 49ers also dropped a close 3-2 decision against UCLA (No. 3). The Bruins remained hot and upped their season record to 19-2 after wins over ranked opponents Arizona State, Florida State, Florida International and Florida Atlantic.
